About Jeannie Shuman of Exhibit J Studios:
In 2010, Jeannie Shuman finally picked up her brushes and started work as a self-taught artist after twenty years of studiously ignoring their siren call. In the two years since, her work has been featured in seven East Coast juried shows, two Maine galleries, and corporate and private collections. Her works are primarily paintings in acrylic or oil. She has lived in the Bangor, Maine area for 23 years.
The artist thinks of her paintings as glimpses into the secret lives of places and people; portraits rendered between heartbeats, before moments, after storms. As such, they are an invitation to a viewer’s empathy, experience and intuition so that s/he might move from observer to an element of that snippet of time and story. For her, it is in that connection when art happens.
As a rule, Jeannie keeps her color pallet minimal and contrasting. Subjects, inspired by Maine and its inhabitants, are kept simple, nearly sparse, in order to leave room for the embellishments brought by the onlooker.
